Today, this town is located in Ideato North Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria. Specifically, it is the remarkable story of our grandfather, Chief Priest Nwogu, the last son of Ejezie.
At the time, Chief Priest Nwogu served as the supreme custodian of Ogwugwu Ejezie. As a result, people across the entire region held him in deep reverence. Yet, when early Catholic missionaries arrived seeking land to build their churches, Chief Priest Nwogu made a choice that sent shockwaves through the community. Ultimately, he freely gave a piece of his land to the Christian missionaries.
Standing Firm Against the Tide
Naturally, gifting ancestral land to an entirely foreign faith met intense opposition. Consequently, his followers and contemporaries fiercely questioned his motives. In fact, they feared the erosion of their traditional authority and customs.
However, Chief Priest Nwogu looked far beyond the immediate conflict. Instead, he foresaw a future built on unity, education, and community growth. To him, building bridges was far more important than building walls. Therefore, he stood firm in his conviction and secured the land for the church.
Recognized in Rome and Honored at Home
Decades later, historical records from the Catholic Church revealed the full impact of his gesture. Furthermore, the Catholic Mission in Rome formally documented Chief Priest Nwogu’s extraordinary generosity.
Indeed, Rome honored his conviction to permanently commemorate his sacrifice. As a tribute, a crucifix sent in honor of his testimony was erected directly at Chief Priest Nwogu’s compound in Ejezie Izuogu.
